Germanic philology

The discipline of Germanic philology studies the German language, the literature and culture of German-speaking countries, as well as the historical transformation and evolution of the language.

At the University of Helsinki, research in Germanic philology has a broad focus on linguistics and literature in the German language. 

Focus areas in current research include 

  • Contemporary German-language literature 
  • Contrastive linguistics
  • Discourse studies
  • German and German-language literature in Finland
  • Language (education) policy 
  • Language in the media
  • Linguistic landscapes
  • Onomastics, or the study of proper names 
  • The multilingualism of individuals, communities and institutions/organisations 
  • The use, evolution and structure of the German language 

The discipline actively networks and collaborates with a number of Finnish and international academic communities.

At the University of Helsinki, the Dutch language is also represented. A study module encompassing studies in language, linguistics, literature and culture is available in Dutch.
