Finnish literature

Finnish literature examines the literature produced in Finland, as well as related research and criticism from the perspectives of theory and literary history. The aim is to interpret and understand the special characteristics of literature, as well as its social conditions and meanings. Contemporary literature and modernism in a broad sense are focused on in particular.

Research subjects include literature as part of the field of art, culture and society – for example, how literature embodies and produces societal reality. In an increasingly complex information society, the ability to see the big picture and to analyse different texts is becoming ever more essential. Understanding literature helps us better understand the surrounding world.

What kind of cultural practices and methods of expression are guiding our ways of interpreting our own experiences, social phenomena and history? What kind of nightmare scenarios are envisioned in society and literature, and how do different media, such as social media, steer us to turn our experiences into narratives?
