As a research discipline, it covers broad themes from linguistics to literature and cultural studies. However, most of the recent research done by members of staff is focused on second language learning and multilingual interaction. Our staff have also authored both pioneering and recent textbooks for learners of Finnish as a second language.
Currently, our staff is engaged in an extensive development project Kielibuusti (“Language Boost”). The project aims to make language education better meet the language proficiency needs of international experts to be recruited to Finland and those already in the country. Kielibuusti is led by professor Jyrki Kalliokoski, who is also the professor of the discipline of Finnish language and culture.
