Leadership and decision-making

The Faculty is led by a dean, who is selected for a term of four years. The dean monitors the Faculty’s operations and is responsible for its general operations, personnel administration and its implementation in accordance with the University’s human resources policy. The dean is also responsible for the Faculty’s financial affairs.

In addition to the HR and financial administration of the Faculty, the dean is in charge of equality, bilingual and international affairs. If the dean is disqualified or absent, the vice-dean appointed by the dean will act as a substitute.

Faculty Council

The Faculty Council is the Faculty’s multi-member administrative body, chaired by the dean. Under the direction of the dean, the Faculty Council enhances the Faculty’s operations as a whole in accordance with the University’s operational and financial objectives, the Strategic Plan of the University of Helsinki as well as the Faculty’s target programme. The Faculty Council elects a vice-chair from among its members.

The Faculty Council of the Faculty of Law includes the dean and 18 members and deputy members. Eight of the members are selected from among professors, five from among other teachers and administrative personnel and another five from among students. The term of the Faculty Council is four years; however, the student representatives are selected for a term of two years.

The duties of the Faculty Council include managing the quality of research and teaching, processing the Faculty’s target programme as well as the human resources plan and budget contained in it, deciding on the standing orders pertaining to the degrees offered by the Faculty, approving the degree requirements and deciding on admission criteria. In addition, all theses are subject to the approval of the Faculty Council.

The Faculty’s operations are also supported by an advisory board, composed of members from outside the University, which promotes interaction and collaboration between the Faculty and its key stakeholders.
