Basking in the Flame – afternoon sessions for students

Would you enjoy meeting new people while engaging in a calm and pleasant activity? Would you like to find a place where you are welcomed without having to perform or commit to anything?

From October 2024, Helsinki University Museum Flame will provide University of Helsinki students with open, free-of-charge afternoon sessions entitled ‘Basking in the Flame’. We offer a friendly and comfortable meeting place for all students, regardless of their personal circumstances. You can join us on your own or with a companion, or find someone to talk to while taking part.

Registration is required for each session, and you can attend one or more. We will meet in the Helsinki University Museum Flame’s exhibition centre in the University’s Main Building (address: Fabianinkatu 33, Helsinki). The meetings will be led by museum staff and experts from the project Yksinäisyystyö korkeakouluissa (‘Combatting loneliness in higher education’).

Afternoon sessions in autumn 2024:

Share a table, Wednesday, 9 October, 17.15–19.00

Get creative with others in the Helsinki University Museum Flame’s exhibition Food for All. We will reflect on the symbolism of still life objects in art and use playdough to create our own collaborative still life composition. While working, we will discuss friendships, relationships and interactions.

The gaze and engagement, Wednesday, 23 October, 16.15–18.00

We will explore works of art displayed in the University’s Main Building and consider the significance of the gaze. How do people wish to present themselves, how do we look at each other and how would we like to be seen? Who are invisible, and how can we make them visible?

Emotional figures, Wednesday, 13 November, 16.15–18.00

The plaster casts displayed in the University's Main Building introduce us to ancient mythology and emotions. What emotions do the sculptures provoke and convey? We will take photos of the sculptures, and write and talk about the significance of emotions and their impact on our lives, including our daily routines and relationships. We will also receive advice on emotional regulation.

Are we alone in the universe? Wednesday, 4 December, 16.15–18.00

We will walk together from the Main Building to the Helsinki Observatory planetarium on Tähtitorninvuori hill to explore the stars and the stories associated with them. Over a cup of glögi, or non-alcoholic mulled wine, we will discuss our human need for separation and connection. What is the difference between being alone and feeling lonely?
