The Author Fee Service provides instructions on how reseachers at the University of Helsinki can publish articles open access. The researchers can take advantage of negotiated agreements with publishers where author fees are included in the cost of the library's journal contract. In addition, if the conditions are met, you can apply for separate funding from the Library to cover the author's fee.

How do I publish my article open access?
- Check whether the University of Helsinki Library has a Read & Publish agreement with the publisher of your choice. The library's contract covers the author's fee, and open access publishing is free of charge to you.
- Publish your article in an open access journal, and meet the conditions for applying for separate APC funding from the library.

Separate APC funding of the library for authors' fees
When you publish your article in a fully open access journal that is not included in the library's contracts, you can apply for author's fee funding from the library's separate APC funding. To apply for funding, you must meet the following conditions:
- You are the corresponding author of the article and have a valid University of Helsinki affiliation at the time of submission. The Library will check your affiliation in the TUHAT research information system.
- The journal in which you intend to publish your article is an open access journal with a Jufo level of 1-3.
- You are submitting an article for publication (submission) for the period 1.1.2025-31.12.2025. Please apply for funding when submitting your article.
- The Library will fund the author's fee for one article up to a maximum of EUR 3,500.
- You publish your article under a CC-BY licence. In certain cases, a more limited licence is accepted.
- For Academy projects/researches that have received a funding decision before 2021, the author fees must be covered by the Academy's research grant.
- A corresponding author may apply for funding for author fees for up to six articles per calendar year. The limit of six articles may be waived for justified reasons.
The funding does not cover editing, image and page charges or the costs of open access publication of scientific books (C1) or edited works (C2).
Funding conditions (2025)
- You are the corresponding author of the article and have a valid University of Helsinki affiliation at the time of submission. (See UH affiliation.) The Library will check your affiliation in the TUHAT research information system.
- The journal in which you intend to publish your article is an open access journal with a Jufo level of 1-3.
- You are submitting an article for publication (submission) for the period 1.1.2025-31.12.2025. Please apply for funding when submitting your article.
- The Library will fund the author's fee for one article up to a maximum of EUR 3,500.
- You publish your article under a CC-BY licence. In certain cases, a more limited licence will be accepted.
- For projects or studies funded by the Academy before 2021, the author's fees must be covered by the Academy's research grant.
- A corresponding author may apply for funding for author fees for up to six articles per calendar year. The limit of six articles may be waived for justified reasons.

University of Helsinki Affiliation
In the context of the author fee service, University of Helsinki affiliation means that the corresponding author has a valid relationship with the University of Helsinki. A valid relationship with the university may be:
- Working Contract
- Other contractual relationship: professorship, associate professorship, visiting scholar, fellowship, or docentorship
- Doctoral studies; registered as present or absent
In addition, the corresponding author must have a valid University of Helsinki user account and helsinki.fi email address. Many publishers require this in order for the author to be considered to be covered by a University of Helsinki contract.
