Holiday season will cause some changes in services and opening hours between 5 December, 2024 - 12 January, 2025.

Customer service

The Main Library's customer service is open during the weekdays, both by phone and on the entrance floor of the Kaisa House. Chat on the library's website and on Helka will be closed from 23 December to 6 January.

Customer service desks at the Campus Libraries are closed between 16 December - 6 January.

Questions and feedback can be sent also through email or webform. We will aim to respond to emails as soon as possible.

Services for open access publishingresearch data management as well as services for publication metrics, visibility and Tuhat-reporting are available to university members. You can reach our specialists by email.

Student Service Point at Kaisa House is open last time before Christmas holidays on Thursday 19 December and opens again on Thursday 9 January. Check the opening hours of the student service on the Studies Service.

Library premises

Meilahti Campus Library has shorter opening hours between 9 - 15 December and 7 - 12 January.

Meilahti Campus Library is closed between 16 December - 6 January and Kumpula Campus Library between 24 December - 6 January.

At the turn of the year, Kaisa House has exceptions in opening hours between 23 December - 6 January and Viikki Campus Library between 21 December - 6 January.

The due date for material from the Meilahti collection is 9 January as follows:

  • 28 day loans starting on 18 November
  • 14 day loans (textbooks) starting on 2 December
  • 2 day loans starting on 12 December

The due date for material from the Kaisa House, Kumpula and Viikki collections is 9 January as follows:

  • 28 day loans starting on 25 November
  • 14 day loans (textbooks) starting on 9 December
  • 2 day loans starting on 19 December

You can order books from the Kumpula and Meilahti collections to be picked up from the Kaisa House or Viikki by making a normal reservation for the book in Helka.

As a rule students can’t get reference material from Meilahti or Kumpula. However, in case of an urgent need e.g. having to do with graduation it is possible to get material by contacting the library (kirjasto@helsinki.fi). All cases are assessed individually.

You can make reservations in Helka all holiday season. It is also possible to make reservations from the libraries that are closed.

When Meilahti and Kumpula are closed, reservations will be sent for pick-up at Kaisa House.

You can check the pick-up location from the notification that Helka sends by email.

You can return books to the Main Library and Viikki Campus Library during the opening hours. 

Books can be returned to the drop boxes around the clock at Kaisa House and Kumpula. In Meilahti, books can be returned to the Haartman Institute's return box during the building's opening hours.

  • Note that the return boxes in Kumpula and Meilahti are emptied twice a week: your loans may not necessarily appear as returned immediately.
  • On the Kumpula Campus the out-of-hours drop box is located at Physicum’s main entrance (Gustaf Hällströmin katu 2a), next to the gray side door.
  • On the Meilahti Campus, please use the return box at the lobby in Haartmaninkatu 3. The building is open Mon-Fri 7:45-15:45.
  • The Kaisa House out-of-hours drop box is located on the left side of the main entrance (Fabianinkatu 30).

Accessing the electronic resources from outside the library locations via a remote connection requires a University user account. Electronic resources of the library can be used by the students, teachers, researchers and staff of the University of Helsinki, as well as students of the Open University of the University of Helsinki.

If you are an external customer, you can access the electronic resources at the library premises either by using the library terminals or on your own laptop via a a HelsinkiUni guest network. The password to the guest network is uniguest.

Staff of the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki University Hospital can request books (excluding textbooks) and articles in periodicals from the HULib collections to be delivered to their desk.

  • The service is available all Christmas season. It is also possible to order books from libraries that are closed.
  • To qualify for this service, the user’s customer information in Helka must include a University email address and the user must be indicated as belonging to the University staff.
  • When making a request in Helka and selecting the pick up location, scroll down to the bottom of the drop-down menu, and select the lowest point Work Address.

The interlibrary loan service is available all christmas season. Requested interlibrary loans will be available for pick-up in the Main Library Kaisa House.
