Our general upper secondary school, a community of individuals, is a small and traditional institution that provides high-quality instruction and the opportunity to lay a solid groundwork for further studies. At our school, which stands for sustainable development, everyone has the right to be themselves.
The school’s history dates back to 1869, when it was the first Finnish-language girls’ school in Finland. In 2019, the school celebrated its 150th anniversary. While we rely on tradition, we also take an open-minded attitude to the future. Our school is esteemed both on the national and international levels, for example, through a range of visits and projects. In 2008, our sustainable development activities received a certificate that has been renewed in 2011, 2014 and 2017.
A musical production performed each year at our general upper secondary school is a very popular and spectacular event.
Pekka Hurskainen serves as the principal of the general upper secondary school of the University of Helsinki’s Viikki Teacher Training School.
The school’s subject teachers and guidance counsellors as well as special needs teachers are responsible for the provision of teaching at the general upper secondary school. Each general upper secondary school group has its own tutor. Matters related to the matriculation examination are handled by Vice-Principal Päivi Korhonen. A pedagogical working group (LuPeda) established for the pedagogical and strategic development of the general upper secondary school and headed by the principal convenes at regular intervals.
The student body of the general upper secondary school is represented by a board, which convenes in facilities appointed to it and handles matters pertaining to general upper secondary school students in relation to school staff and the student body organisation. The board also takes care of the finances of the student body organisation. The chair of the board continually interacts with the principal of the general upper secondary school.
The tutors at the general upper secondary school collaborate closely with guardians, contacting them in matters related to studying and school attendance, meeting with them in specific student-related matters and at parents’ meetings, as well as planning joint events (e.g., refreshments for the general upper secondary school dance).
The primary medium of communication is the Wilma system.
