Projects and researchers funded by the European Research Council (ERC)

The European Research Council (ERC) is one of the most esteemed funders of research. The ERC supports long-term, top-level research. These pages provide information on the ERC-funded projects, researchers and groups active at the University of Helsinki.
Our success in ERC grants

University of Helsinki researchers have received a total of more than 120 ERC grants, which is nearly half of all the ERC funding granted to Finland.

More than 50 of our ERC grants are for projects ongoing in 2024.

Funding schemes

The ERC awards grants to three main groups:

  1. Promising junior researchers (Starting Grant)
  2. Established researchers who have conducted research for 7 to 12 years (Consolidator Grant)
  3. Advanced leading researchers (Advanced Grant)

In addition, the ERC awards grants, for example, to projects collaboratively carried out by several universities (Synergy Grant) and for commercialising research (Proof of Concept).
