The Data catalogue is a service that describes the research data produced within the University of Helsinki. In the Data catalogue, description data (metadata) can be retrieved and browsed. In particular, the service increases the visibility of hidden research data. Such datasets include sensitive datasets and materials for which there is no suitable place for publication in open data repositories.
The researcher can describe his or her data to the Data catalogue and get a permanent identifier for it, regardless of where the data itself is located. The data is entered in the Data catalogue using an online form. The Data catalogue is also automatically scanned for metadata from the research datasets from the much-used data repository. The data entered in the Data catalogue will be transferred to the Finnish Research Information Hub maintained by CSC.
At the same time, the data catalogue acts as a search interface for the materials stored in the University of Helsinki Databank. In the Databank, researchers can put their research data for storage after the project or as soon as the data no longer needs to be edited. The Databank is therefore a safe place to store static data. Databank material is described, which means that the datasets are given a name, a short description, authors, license and retain an identifier (DOI).
