Media at the Planetary Boundaries - Researchers and Journalists Enabling a Sustainable Future (Media planetaarisilla rajoilla - tutkijat ja toimittajat kestävän tulevaisuuden mahdollistajina) is a Kone Foundation funded three year long project which officially started in March 2025. The The idea for the project came from the HELSUS Media Group, which has been discussing, developing and working for almost two years to promote the visibility of sustainability science and researchers in the Finnish media.
The grant will be used to create collaboration between journalists and researchers by offering workshops and training around strong sustainability, including perspectives on systems thinking, multi-disciplinary sustainability, planetary boundaries and sufficiency. The project will focus on how the media could increase coverage of the sustainability transformation and what journalists and researchers can do to increase systems thinking, holistic and solution-oriented content in the Finnish media. Towards the end of the project, the aim is to take the knowledge accumulated in the project to sustainability science institutes abroad to inspire them to increase cooperation between researchers and the media.
