The Department’s research relates broadly to microbes, toxins and chemical contaminants borne by food, animals, water and the environment, as well as spoilage bacteria associated with food, and environmental health control.

The Department boasts strong research traditions, and its research has received the highest marks in international assessments. We enhance the quality and impact of our research by networking and collaborating with authorities, businesses as well as national and international research communities. Our facilities and research laboratories are located on the University of Helsinki’s Viikki Campus.
Helsinki One Health (HOH) is a research network that was established to support and coordinate research on the shared health issues of humans and animals at the University of Helsinki. The network focuses on the interaction between the health of animal and human populations in a rapidly changing environment. It encourages various fields and professions to work together for the resolution of new health problems that affect the whole of humankind and animal populations.
