Degree requirements and target degrees

Postgraduate degrees offered by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine include the following: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy.

Postgraduate degrees offered by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine include the following: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy.

When approving an application for postgraduate studies, the Faculty will decide on the basis of the applicant’s previous studies and the topic of the planned doctoral dissertation to which degree the applicant’s studies will lead.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine may admit the following persons to pursue the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine:

  • holders of the Licentiate of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (formerly the College of Veterinary Medicine) at the University of Helsinki
  • holders of an equivalent degree from an institution abroad providing eligibility for equivalent higher education in the country in question
  • persons whom the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has found otherwise qualified to pursue the doctoral degree

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine may admit the following persons to pursue the degree of Doctor of Philosophy:

  • holders of a Master's degree from a Finnish university
  • holders of an equivalent degree from an institution abroad providing eligibility for equivalent higher education in the country in question
  • persons whom the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has found qualified to pursue the doctoral degree

In addition, applicants who have been admitted to pursue a licentiate degree in medicine and dentistry or a licentiate degree in veterinary medicine at a Finnish university or at a university from EU/EEA country, or at the University of Helsinki can also be admitted to pursue a postgraduate research degree.

Furthermore, Faculty can admit applicants licensed as a healthcare professional by the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health or veterinarians licensed by the Finnish Food Authority who have completed applicable education abroad in their home country equivalent to a second-cycle university degree or a second-cycle degree from a university of applied sciences.

 

Each doctoral programme has their own degree requirements which include 40 ects of theoretical studies, doctoral dissertation and the public defence of the dissertation. You can find degree requirements of each doctoral programme on My studies -page and choosing your degree programme.

Doctoral programmes organise theoretical and methodological courses. The way how the courses are completed vary and is flexible. Studies may include e.g. seminars, workshops or by presenting your research at scientific conferences.
