Enrollment and study fees (renewed enrollment system)

We are developing our registration system. This page contains the registration and payment instructions for open university courses, which are in the new Sisu registration system.

You can find the registration and payment instructions for our previous registration system on our website at

Please note that the registration and payment terms are the same regardless of the registration system.

Important notes regarding registration

Please carefully review both the instructions on this page and the content, implementation method, and any prerequisites for prior knowledge of the course you have chosen before registering.

Registration period

  • The registration dates are provided on the course page.
  • Registration is not possible after the registration period has ended. Late registration may be considered on a case-by-case basis if there are remaining spots in the course.

Filling Study Places

  • Register on time! There are often a limited number of spots available, and there is no waiting list.
  • Places in open university courses are primarily filled in the order of registration. Other criteria, such as the completion of prior studies, may also be considered.
  • The selection of attending degree students at the University of Helsinki is based on prerequisites, selection criteria, and group size. You can find the selection criteria in Sisu when registering through your study plan.

Registration for courses is binding and cannot be transferred to other courses except on a case-by-case basis.

Note that registration requires strong identification.

Strong Authentication
Strong Authentication

Please note that you must authenticate strongly to participate in the courses.

You must confirm your registration within 72 hours of paying the course fee. Confirmation requires electronic identification using either the University of Helsinki username or the suomi.fi service.

Confirm you place by identifying yourself immediately after registering.

Participation in the courses requires strong authentication because you will gain access to university services. Additionally, your completed studies grades will be recorded in the University of Helsinki Sisu-system.

Authentication verifies your identity. If you are unable to authenticate strongly, confirming your registration and processing your access to university services may take several days or even a few weeks.

The service developed by the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, Suomi.fi, is available for use.

Additionally, authentication is also possible through the European identification (eIDAS).

When Strong Authentication is Not Possible

When you confirm your paid study place, you need to authenticate.

Please note: If you cannot authenticate strongly, the authentication process may take several weeks.

Here's how to register:

  1. Register and pay for your chosen course.
    • Immediately contact student advise for more detailed instructions.
  2. Authenticate using your chosen method. If you cannot authenticate strongly remotely, you can choose from the following options:
    • Arrive for authentication by appointment at the Helsinki customer service point.
    • Submit an official identification document either by mail or through secure email.

Activating Your User Account

Once your study place is confirmed and you need access rights from the University of Helsinki for your course, you still need to activate your user account:

  • If you authenticate at the customer service point, you will receive a code and instructions for activating your user account.
  • If you submit the document, you will receive instructions via email for completing the access rights application and requesting remote authentication.

Please note that there may be a queue for remote authentication, so act in a timely manner.
