Cross-institutional studies between universities

Are you studying at another Finnish higher education institution? Did you find an interesting course in our selection? If your institution has a cross-study agreement with the University of Helsinki, the course may also be available to you.
What are cross-institutional studies?
  • Cross-institutional studies allow you to complete courses at another Finnish higher education institution through established cross-institutional networks between universities.
  • To participate in cross-institutional studies at the University of Helsinki, both your degree programme or major subject and the degree programme offering the course at the University of Helsinki must belong to the same cross-institutional network.
  • You can only take part in cross-institutional studies if your study right at your home university is valid and you are currently registered as attending.

If you’re interested in cross-institutional studies with us, please read the instructions and check with your home university which cross-institutional networks your subject or degree programme is a part of!

Instructions for incoming students

These instructions are intended for students from other higher education institutions who are interested in cross-institutional studies at the University of Helsinki.

If you are already studying with us and would like to complete courses at another university through cross-institutional studies, please refer to the instructions for outgoing students in the Studies Service.

You can check in your personal study information in Sisu or Peppi at your own institution whether your degree rights entitle you to complete studies at another higher education institution through cross-institutional studies. This is called a network right. However, not all network rights are currently visible in your personal study rights. You can contact the student services at your own institution to find out more about your opportunities for cross-institutional studies.

Your right to study at the University will expire when your right to study at your home institution expires, if no earlier expiration dates have been set. However, your home institution and the University of Helsinki may have agreed that your right to pursue cross-institutional studies is valid only for a specific period.

Once you have found a course at another institution that you wish to take through cross-institutional studies, review the course description and registration periods. In many cases, you register for the course in your institution’s Sisu or Peppi in the same way as you would for courses at your own institution. You will receive separate instructions if it is not possible to register for a cross-institutional course through your institution’s Sisu or Peppi.

If you encounter problems with registration, please wait until the next day: in some cases, the background system updates the registration status overnight. If the issue persists, contact the student services at your own institution. Your institution and the institution offering the course will work together to resolve any registration issues.

A curriculum contains information on course provision and completion methods, timetables, facilities, teachers and registration as well as other useful details. Although we offer a wide range of online teaching, some courses may require on-site attendance in Helsinki.

As a rule, the curricula for the autumn and spring terms are published in the course search of our Studies Service by the end of June, while information on summer studies is published in early March. Detailed information on the teaching programme is available on the page ‘Where can I find courses’ in the Studies Service.

Examinations are one way of assessing your skills. Examinations may be organised during classes, at the end of a course or as closed-book examinations. You can complete some examinations digitally at a time that suits you best in one of the University’s Examinarium facilities.

For further information, visit the instructions for general examinations, Examinarium examinations  and examinations organised in the Moodle learning environment in the University of Helsinki Studies Service.

Any studies you complete at the University of Helsinki are assessed and recorded in the University’s Sisu system. Credits completed in certain cross-institutional networks are transferred automatically, in which case you need not submit a separate application for their transfer. In other cases, after obtaining a transcript of studies you can apply for credit transfer at your own higher education institution in accordance with its practices.

The purpose of acts, decrees, decisions and instructions on degrees and studies is to ensure the equal and uniform treatment of students, their access to information, and the protection of their rights in study-related situations. If you are dissatisfied with the assessment of your studies, read the instructions available on the page ‘Protection of students’ rights and review procedures’ in the Studies Service.
