Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine

The Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine (DPBM) focuses on biomedicine, including translational medicine and molecular medicine. The doctoral programme strives to ensure high-quality postgraduate education for our doctoral researchers providing them with the skills needed for both professional research careers and demanding specialist positions.
Did you know?

The doctoral programme offers high-quality doctoral training in the areas of biomedicine and translational and molecular medicine.

50 new doctoral researchers are admitted into the programme each year.

Our doctoral researchers are a diverse and international group representing more than 20 nationalities.
Key Research Areas

The doctoral programme covers the fields of biomedicine, translational medicine, and molecular medicine, with research focusing on the molecular aspects of these fields. The common theme across all the different research areas is that the research questions are relevant to human health and/or disease.

The research in the Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine encompasses, for example (but is not limited to), the following fields: cancer biology, immunology and infection biology, stem cell research, molecular neurology, metabolic research, precision medicine, the human microbiome, molecular diagnostics and imaging, translational medicine, systems biology, and artificial intelligence in the context of biomedicine.

Our doctoral researchers are working in top-level research groups not only at the Faculty of Medicine but also at various units within the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (FIMM, Institute of Biotechnology, Neuroscience Center), at private research institutes based on the Meilahti Campus and at the faculties on the Viikki Campus.

The Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine offers an international environment for research and training, in addition to plenty of opportunities for international networking.
